Guest guest
Good afternoon everyone, I hope this doesn't get too lengthy as I have several questions, statements and an introduction here. :-) My name is Shelly, I am 40 yrs. old, I reside in SC with my wonderful husband and best friend of the last 20+ years and our youngest son who is the last of three who still lives at home, he is 16. I've studied the rawfood diet as an appropriate diet for my dogs for probably three years now. Not until recently did it occur to me <did you see the lightbulb come on?> to search for information about a raw food diet for the humans in my life. I am not sure at this time if I would EVER be able to go 100% raw as I do like some meats but when I think of the foods that I enjoy I realize that I am probably already 60% or so there. I found this group and you all seem to be a blessing if a bit overwhelming for a newbie like me so I have read some and I have deleted some to keep myself from getting frustrated and overwhelmed so forgive me if some of the questions I ask have been posed previously. First I joined the list when the discussion on using soaps, shampoos, etc. was going and see that lemon is the preferred choice in most instances. That got me to wondering what everyone washed their clothing in? Just water and lemon as well or what are the other alternatives? Also what about moisturizers? Or once you get enough raw in your diet along with plenty of fluids does one just not need a moisturizer? I seem to have missed the whole discussion on alkaline diets as it pertains to candida but I did do a search on candida and seem to have several of the syptoms so what is an alkaline diet made up of and how will one know when they no longer need such a diet? Thanks to you all I have been grabbing a piece of fruit each morning for breakfast over my normal morning bagel with red plum jelly. Surprisingly (to me anyway) today I flat turned my nose up at that bag of bagels when I decided I was hungry and went rummaging through the fridge to see what I could find in the form of fresh fruit. I was just dying for a banana and a navel orange but am fresh out so dug for something else. I found a rather crappy (although it was supposed to be fresh) peach I had purchased at Wal-Mart (won't do that again) and a delectable red plum I had picked up at the farmer's market. Yum! Now I am just sitting here trying to patiently wait until the farmer's market opens again this Saturday as I am actually psyched about grabbing all kinds of fresh farm grown goodies there! That's exciting and totally unexpected on my part. Is it natural that one's body starts craving these type of things so quickly when a person starts making raw choices no matter how minute they may seem to that person at the time? I mean I'm like ready to go into orbit, land somewhere and say, " Take me to your fruit and vegetable stands and no one will get hurt! " And to think I was that way about Diet Coke just one week ago when I got smart and did some research into aspartame toxicity and haven't touched one since! And if you only knew what a Diet Coke junkie I had been you'd realize what an enormous change this is for me. I loved that drink sooooo much I even decorated my kitchen in Coke decor for pete's sake! What in the world was I thinking? The fact is, I wasn't! It was on the shelves in every store and silly me assumed it was safe, boy do I have a lot to learn and I am thankful that there is this supportive group in place in order for me to do that. I'll end this novel now before I put you all to sleep but thank you in advance to all who will answer my questions. Guest guest
> Good afternoon everyone, Hi Shelly! welcome to the group! now, fasten your seatbelts, the plane is about to take off, and we may encounter some turbulence along the way....and heeeerreee we gooooooo.... > > I hope this doesn't get too lengthy as I have several questions, statements and an introduction here. :-) questions are great! > My name is Shelly, I am 40 yrs. old, I reside in SC with my wonderful husband and best friend of the last 20+ years and our youngest son who is the last of three who still lives at home, he is 16. Hi...I'm Bob...I'm almost 54, live in Tampa, FL and used to live in Lancaster, SC ('82-86) ;=) ) also married, 33yrs, with our youngest, last of 4, 17, and he'll be back at home (in specialty boarding school right now...) in June. He was just home this week for a home pass. > I've studied the rawfood diet as an appropriate diet for my dogs for probably three years now. Not until recently did it occur to me <did you see the lightbulb come on?> to search for information about a raw food diet for the humans in my life. > > I am not sure at this time if I would EVER be able to go 100% raw *(..whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're correct....<= paraphrased..) I encourage you to continue to look at/evaluate what are HEALTHY choices? )* as I do like some meats but when I think of the foods that I enjoy I realize that I am probably already 60% or so there. keep going; as you introduce more and more healthy choices toward a more healthy lifestyle, you may like dead, rotting animal flesh less.. Health can only come from a healthy lifestyle. Food/nutrition is one aspect of such a lifestyle; there are at least 18 others (more on that another time..) > > I found this group and you all seem to be a blessing if a bit overwhelming for a newbie like me so I have read some and I have deleted some to keep myself from getting frustrated and overwhelmed so forgive me if some of the questions I ask have been posed previously. *working choice: read some...delete some...no need to be overwhelmed; relax: breathe! If you change your settings to also include a daily digest, you can then cut and paste it/them into Word, and have a better search engine available....* > > First I joined the list when the discussion on using soaps, shampoos, etc. was going and see that lemon is the preferred choice in most instances. That got me to wondering what everyone washed their clothing in? *two recent answers given previously. : sea salt - 1-2 TBLS per load and/or some vinegar in the water (white or apple cider....) I've been using both for ~3-4 weeks, making sure I catch the laundry before my SAD wife, or ...you know the rest... Just water and lemon as well or what are the other alternatives? *lemon was more for cleaning, and/or hair-washing than laundry..* Also what about moisturizers? *not needed, just clog the pores....* Or once you get enough raw in your diet along with plenty of fluids does one just not need a moisturizer? *other than some supplemental good, distilled water, possibly not, once we're consuming enough high water content, fresh organic or better, properly combined foods. many fruits are at least 70% water, with some, like watermelon, being much higher...* > > I seem to have missed the whole discussion on alkaline diets as it pertains to candida but I did do a search on candida and seem to have several of the syptoms so what is an alkaline diet made up of and how will one know when they no longer need such a diet? * alkaline (pH greater than 7.0, up to 14....we just need slightly alkaline, I think like 7.4 (or whatever the natural blood pH is...) not caustic) diet: made up primarily of foods, generally fruits and vegys (tender young lettuce: fabulous for this!) , that are either alkaline, like sweet fruits, bananas, dates, figs, pears, etc., or metabolized as alkaline: like citrus. all concentrated proteins, esp. meats, are acidic, and are to be avoided... as humans, we will *always* need an alkaline diet...note comments above about meat being acidic..* some snipping below: * bagels, as you probably know, are *not* an optimal/working, health-creating choice.* > Thanks to you all I have been grabbing a piece of fruit each morning for breakfast over my normal morning bagel with red plum jelly. Surprisingly (to me anyway) today I flat turned my nose up at that bag of bagels *fabulous* working choice* Is it natural that one's body starts craving these type of things so quickly when a person starts making raw choices no matter how minute they may seem to that person at the time? *My experience says yes, that when we start listening to our bodies, giving it *any* of what it naturally needs, it provides further direction for us, as we continue to listen.* I mean I'm like ready to go into orbit, land somewhere and say, " Take me to your fruit and vegetable stands and no one will get hurt! " *easy there, Trigger...lol!* And to think I was that way about Diet Coke just one week ago when I got smart and did some research into aspartame toxicity and haven't touched one since! *yes, Coke spends more on advertising in one year than the entire health food industry combined (or something very similar to that...order of magnitude is the point...), and the Raw food movement/ Natural Hygiene way doesn't even make a rounded off decimal point in the grand scheme of things! Coke is a for-profit commercial company, with tons of money for advertising and research. They are well aware of the " addicting " properties of what they're selling.* What in the world was I thinking? The fact is, I wasn't! *excellent observation! yes, most of us are very programmed by what we see on TV, read in the press, and hear on the radio. I've found that some local, non-commercial radio, plus NPR are helpful in this regard.* It was on the shelves in every store and silly me assumed it was safe, boy do I have a lot to learn and I am thankful that there is this supportive group in place in order for me to do that. I'll end this novel now before I put you all to sleep but thank you in advance to all who will answer my questions. *hope some of this helps...* all the best, Bob (finishing up 7th month raw...and just over 2 months of frugivore)
