16, 2005 6:58 AM [Raw Food] On Everything! - and kiwis

I tend to live by oranges in the winter and peaches by summer....

I'm having difficulty deciding whether I picked up these kiwis out of

intuition of not? - and now I have confused myself into almost fear of them!

I am focusing on alkalizing my body - it certainly needs a big input. Would

you imagine that kiwis are not such a good choice? I was definitely drawned

to the strawberries, but I tend to only eat 4-6 at a time and rarely on the

same day as tomatoes. I am not intending to eat kiwis in large amounts and

would only desire 1-2 as a meal in any event

What do you think would be the best alkalizing choices for me at this time -

out of the given selection?

_____

Hi Kay,

I realize you wrote much more, but I think the foregoing excerpt from your

message is sufficient to create a useful focus for you. I also realize that

you have already learned a great deal about how and what to eat from Doug,

Tim, and others. At the same time, I am sensing some important gaps in what

you have learned, and I would like to talk with you about those, if that is

okay with you. (I suppose if it is not okay, you'll just hit " Delete. " )

It is one thing to learn about 80/10/10, about eating a diet high in fruits

and tender greens, low in everything else. It is quite another matter to

learn how to put it all together, so that it works for you naturally and

with ease. This is why I substituted the subject line " Transitioning " on

this message. I realize we have not met and have only connected via this

group, but I have the sense that focusing on some transitioning issues will

help you a great deal. So hear goes....

You mention a need to alkalize your body. I agree. The most alkalizing foods

are SWEET fruits and tender greens. Therefore, since most of the calories

come from the fruits, we want to build our diet around sweet fruits.

You mention, in the excerpt above, that you emphasize oranges and peaches,

seasonally. Oranges are an acid fruit, and peaches semisweet (subacid).

Choosing these fruits as the core of your program will not likely raise your

body alkalinity to the degree you need and desire, even if you eat 2 heads

of lettuce daily. The acid-forming components in the oranges and, to a

lesser extent, the peaches are simply too overwhelming to the body.

It is a common misconception, taught by many RF teachers, that oranges are a

" cleansing " food. In my opinion, this is actually medical-model thinking,

creeping right into the heart of the RF world. The underlying principle is

that the oranges will somehow cleanse the body. The body cleanses itself, to

the best of its present ability, using the inputs it receives. Therefore, if

a generally alkalizing approach supports the body in cleansing itself, then

oranges are not nearly as " cleansing " as watermelons bananas, dates, figs,

apricots, grapes, or even pears, peaches, nectarines, and mangos.

So Kay, even though you have apparently transitioned to organic and have

successfully cut the excess fat and protein from your program, there is

still some transitioning for you to do. And from a distance, I sense that

you might begin by bringing in much more sweet fruit, every day. Also, I see

in your full post that you prefer dark greens. May I suggest that you focus

more on tender leafy greens, basically lettuces? These are far lower in

harsh, insoluble/indigestible fiber, and given the apparent state of your

digestive system, you may find this change constructive.

There is much more we could discuss -- quantities you eat, food combining,

sleep and rest, emotional issues, and so forth. But for now, let's see how

you feel about what I've shared here.

Best to all,

Elchanan
