I have been making my " morning smoothies " everyday in my blender - and these

are the ingredients that I use:

BANANAS - always my " base "

ANY AND ALL VARIETIES OF FRESH FRUIT - with the exception of citrus fruits;

I find that when made in my blender, the citrus fruits have a tendency to

clog up my straw, lol, so I don't use them in smoothies.

ICE CUBES WITH ADDED COLD WATER - I have found that to get the " right "

consistancy that I am after, I need to add a bit of cold water, with the ice

cubes.

A COUPLE OF " LARGE HANDFULS " OF MIXED GREENS & VEGIES - What I do is just

use my daily salad mix that I have made up; which consists of a large

variety of mixed greens, and vegies that I have tossed in to keep the greens

company; mostly green vegetables of one sort or another.

Thats it! My question is, does this seem like the appropriate/healthful way

that is recommended to make smoothies? I was just making only fruit

smoothies, but when I read about green smoothies being so beneficial, I

started adding greens and other suitable vegies, such as brocolli, etc.

It still seems " weird " to me to be mixing in the greens with the fruit, but

from what I have recently read in my Raw Groups, is that this is fine to do.

(I had been hung-up on what I had previously read about NOT mixing fruits

with vegies/greens, Etc.)

I have found that since I started making my smoothies GREEN, that I like

them even better, and that is what I have begun to CRAVE in the mornings

now!

It can all be so confusing, and I would like to know that what I am doing is

fine; or if there is something that I should change, I would like to know

that too.

Hi, I was working quickly earlier and now I am reading more carefully.

Regarding your (Swing) earlier question about mixing in the veggies, the

greens are ideal (soft lettuces and celery best).I didn't see that you were

using greens AND other veggies. There can be three issues about using other

veggies:

1. You can end up undereating calories by limiting the quantity of fruits in

favor of veggies. This would probably show up as hunger, a " sweet " tooth, or

perhaps even a craving of some sort later in the day. Easy enough to monitor

yourself, just something to notice.

2. You are bringing in a considerable increase in insoluble/nondigestible

fiber, as opposed to the predominance of water-soluble/digestible fiber in

most fruits.

3, The digestive system appreciates simple, " proper " food combinations. In

particular, the more you bring in anything starchy, the more you promote

fermentation inside you.

(Sugar + starch + water --> fermentation).

Root veggies, for example, are often somewhat starchy. Examples includes

carrots, beets.

So my suggestion is to stay more with leafy greens and celery. And again, I

apologize for missing this distinction in my earlier message.

Finally, as earlier, I question the ice, are you looking for a somewhat

" slushy " consistency? I ask because everything in the body happens at body

temperature, in the mid-nineties and above. So whenever we eat anything

whose temperature is outside that range, the body must adjust accordingly. I

often add an ice cube or two to a smoothie, but I don't use ice as they do

on bars and such.

Best to all,

Elchanan

I think you're referring to Joanie's post(if I'm not

mistaken), not mine.

Anyhow, for my morning smoothies I use the juice of 4

oranges, 1 mango, 1 banana and a couple of handfuls of

greens (usually kale or spinach). I just got a vitamix

though which grinds things up really well so I'm going

to start throwing in whole oranges and see how that

turns out.
