Noticing our progress [s]

Hi everyone,

Lynne, her husband Nick, and I were just talking via Internet phone, and

during the conversation I remembered something I would like to share.

Nearly eight years ago, when I met Laurie Masters and she first introduced

me to the idea of eating raw food, we had a conversation where I said the

following, word for word -- neither of us will ever forget it:

I want to make a lot of money, so that

WHEN I have MY heart attack, I will be

able to afford the best heart surgeon with

the highest survivability rate.

That's a direct quote, from my mouth to your computer screen. I capitalized

the words " when " and " my, " because I truly was convinced that a heart attack

was inevitable -- my father, grandfather, and great grandfather all

apparently died of heart problems -- and I really had taken total ownership

of this -- this was really MY heart attack, not A heart attack.

I cannot speak for other countries or cultures, but here in America, many

are taught to set goals, then measure our progress against those goals. And

of course, almost all the time we only partially achieve any given goal.

What a way to destroy our own self-esteem!!!

So today I offer you a contrast, between where I began my own journey,

exemplified by my statement above, and where I am now, exemplified by my

many posts to this group. When I consider all that I HAVE accomplished, I

feel quite wonderful and a great sense of joy, self-reliance, competence,

etc. I wouldn't even dream of focusing on what I haven't done, because I

have learned that I don't even know yet most of what I haven't done. For me,

that is the true sense of this life being a journey, not a collection of

destinations.

Best to all,

Elchanan

Beautiful....it brought to mind something I have learned about measuring my own

progress, or evaluating my life to this point: First, I don't know the " big

picture " , so to speak, and that nothing is wasted. Everything I have chosen in

my life, whether I have seen it as good or as bad, has brought me to the place I

am now. I would not be the person I am without all those things, both joyous and

painful, that have been part of my life.

Peace,

Valerie

Very cool post Elchanan, thanks for sharing that. It's

so easy to get caught up in that kind of thinking,

isn't it? I mean, our society is completely geared to

it.
