I guess you mean the packaged pitted ones that are drier than the nonpitted fresh ones. But I eat them both without noticing much difference in them. I don't eat dried fruit though. I can't imagine by your definition of fresh ones that they're rare in North America, California and other hot areas with palm trees produce a lot of them.
