In general, all seeds contain both constructive components and known,

serious poisons, such as arsenic. Seed extracts are often touted as remedies

for various " conditions, " but no company in its right mind would promote the

eating of the whole seeds, they are just too toxic. Some regard melon seeds

as an exception, and they chew up those seeds when eating the melon.

More generally, all seeds are high in fat and nondigestible fiber. The good

news is this: if you swallow the seeds whole, your body cannot and therefore

will not break them down, and you'll be able to observe them again your

poop. (Try this with flax seed crackers, actually look at what happens

awhile after you eat the crackers. The " evidence " by observation is quite

clear.) And when swallowed whole, the fat and fiber simply pass through our

system.

Hope this is helpful,

Elchanan

In the book, " Nutrition: The Cancer Asnwer " by Maureen Salaman, she says that a

very important nutrient is contained in the seeds or kernels of some

foods--Vitamin B-17 or amygdalin. Apparently if we watch monkeys or apes in the

zoo who are given a piece of fruit the first thing they do is to open the fruit,

get the seed out, crack it open and eat it first as if it was something special.

They follow their instincts while we, the civilized, intelligent beings that we

are, generally eat the fruits and toss out the seeds. She says we should eat

the seeds of an apple, peach, apricot etc chewing very well. They are slightly

bitter and the minute amount of arsenic in a fruit is enough to help the body

fight off some disease conditions but nearly not enough to poison a person.

There are people in the Himalayas who eat a lot of apricots and seeds and

cancer is pretty much unknown to them.

In my fight against cancer I don't eat a lot of seeds but I do have a list of

foods that give us B-17 and try to eat a lot of them. My favorite is wild

blackberries which we have a lot of in our area.

Yes, I am familiar with such observations. I have learned over time to

moderately mistrust observations of animals in captivity. They are almost

ALL suffering from malnutrition because of what we do and do not feed them,

so their responses may reflect that. Certain animals may eat a few seeds

from certain fruits, and in truth that may very well be fine for us, as

well. But there is such a tendency, that is, culturally so many of us have

been trained to believe that " more is better, " I tend to err on the

conservative side in certain matters. One such matter involves seeds.

The ONLY way to get any nutrients from any seed is either to grind it up

before eating it or to chew it very well. Once the seed has left the mouth,

no further substantive physical breaking apart occurs, whatever is digested

is merely harvested from the available surfaces of the chewed/ground up

seed.

Also and again, we have been taught to think in fractional terms, to go

searching for this or that nutrient. If you were actually to make a list of

ALL the nutrients for which we have known standards and pursue each such

nutrient in this way, you would probably transform into the human equivalent

of the Goodyear blimp. This entire approach to eating, and to

problem-solving in general, does not work.

Many people use the term " holism " (or " holistic " ), but few have been taught

what it actually means (as in the underlying quantum physics). For the

moment, I'll simply say that we cannot solve a problem by looking at a few

of its parts. Or as Einstein said, the problem we create on any level of

thinking cannot be solved on that same level of thinking. We must reach for

a metaview, ever toward increasingly holistic perspectives, if we are to

solve today's problems, be they health, nutrition, traffic, whatever.

Best to all,

Elchanan
