Guest guest
Thank you for organizing this, Rachel! One thing I learned when leafleting is just how often the subject of humane meat comes up, particularly in the Bay Area. When leafleting in the past, I noticed how often the anti-factory farming argument led people in the direction of humane meat and not towards vegetarianism. I felt frustrated that the available literature only discussed health, the environment, and factory farming, all of which are reasons to choose humane meat (as people may find out at the book reading!). To try to address this lack in the literature, I helped work on LOVE's pamphlets on veganism, which incorporate lessons learned over the course of thousands of leafleting interactions. Instead of using the very arguments that created and fuel the humane meat phenomenon, the pamphlets focus the discussion on the use of non-human animals without their free consent. The leaflets are not perfect, but they do present a strong vegan message and specifically address why humane animal agriculture and veganism are incompatible. I think they offer a strong case for veganism even as local, sustainable, humane animal agriculture circumvents the reasons commonly cited for vegetarianism. You can download the pamphlets at: http://loveallbeings.org/living-veganism/vegan-pamphlets/ Of course, we vegetarians don't always share a common reason for our choice of diet (and I remember from a conversation with you that we may differ a bit in this regard), and so our choice of literature might naturally differ. I wanted to share this particular pamphlet with you as an additional resource to choose from, especially given that it grew out of the experience of meeting so many people while leafleting who chose humane meat after learning about factory farms. Victor Rachel wrote: I'm sure that very few will have read the book already and been exposed to the idea that " humane meats " (oxymoron) is the answer. So we can head them off at the pass with some great leaflets that explain why " going vegan " is a much better answer! -- The Vegan Ideal: http://veganideal.org/ Veganism as Anti-Oppression: http://loveallbeings.org/
