Guest guest
Hi Bay Area Veggies, Tomorrow is the Oakland Marathon, the race the PETA Pack team has been training for since the first weekend of January. Because of runners like Dana (awesome), the team raised almost $50,000 to help cruelty investigations into abuse cases and undercover investigations. Remember--animals can't pick up the phone and dial 911 for help. And they can't write a check to fund more veg advocacy. It takes humans to do that and these humans are *fabulous!!* But to give credit where credit is due--I want to say THANK YOU to Bay Area Vegetarians. Our team is bigger and better this year thanks to BAV's great list.Tammy and Chris have spent thousands and thousands of hours (after working full-time jobs), and money creating BAV. BAV is responsible for busy local weekends every week. Today and tomorrow there's a vegan baking class, the PETA Pack, and a vegan pizza party. They publicize lectures, events with Bruce from PETA, bake sales, veg restaurant gatherings, vegan food parties and so much more. Vegan Prom and Vegan Valentines were huge successes for Vegan Outreach, thanks to local volunteers and BAV's involvement. BAV made Pride a brilliant 2 days of advocacy (and fun), and they're already gearing up for 2010. Some of these events were organized by BAV, others just supported by Chris and Tammy as they worked to make sure local veg events succeeded. This is only the tip of the iceberg, of course, and I'm sorry for leaving out hundreds of great events. I hope everyone will join me in giving Chris and Tammy a standing ovation this weekend. Thank you Tammy and Chris!! Hope you all have an excellent baking class (I know it will be--Christine is incredible) and wish us luck in the race tomorrow. That reminds me. Two more huge THANK YOU's to Lanesplitter Pizza for an amazing donation of their delicious vegan pizza to the team for the post-race bash, and to Jeff and Drew for the pasta feed tonight!Alexp.s.If you've been wanting to see a new event in the Bay Area--perhaps a letter-writing party, or vegan Toastmasters?--do it! All of these great events happened because a few people really wanted to help animals (and have fun while doing it). Don't sit around moping and waiting for a new event to start. Start it yourself! Guest guest
Hi folks, Alex, that is totally awesome about the PETA PACK'ers. Congratulations to you, Dana, Michelle and others who did the heavy lifting on this! Chris and I are glad BAVeg could play a supporting role in this, and activities for Vegan Outreach as well. I think PETA's undercover investigations are very important and necessary to expose animal cruelty. Personally, PETA had a huge influence on me when I learned about animal rights and advocacy, so it's great that something that I helped create (i.e. BAVeg) is in turn supporting PETA. Your email especially resonated with me as I have been reflecting on what "community" means to different people in our little veg world, and the different roles that people and organizations play. It's totally awesome to see the different events happening, to see people spontaneously step forward where they see a need for an event and offer to organize it (look at Rachel's post today about the Cesar Chavez parade, go Rachel!). This is exactly the energy and commitment that we -- as the local animal rights & veg community -- need to keep ours a vibrant and diverse community. It's always encouraging to see more people (new people) organize events and activities to help animals, and connect and support our community. Cheers, Tammy On Behalf Of Alex BurySaturday, March 27, 2010 10:36 AMSfbaveg Bay Area Vegetarians = Love.
