If you can't see this AoC Alert page properly, Click here to read online. Please join LGBT Compassion and AoC, with advocates, this Sunday, in protesting against animal cruelty from poultry vendors selling chickens, ducks, quails, pheasants, and other birds at San Francisco's Civic Center Farmers Market this Sunday morning, the 21st of March. When: ***SUNDAY***21st of March, 9:00am to (at least) 11:00am (Please note, If you cannot make it until later Sunday, you might still be able to participate with some advocates until noon or until the bird vendors leave the grounds. Please check the the AoC Advocacy hotline - (206) 333-1976 - on a demo status update.) Where: "Heart of the City" Civic Center Farmers Market 1182 Market St (between 8th St & Grove St) San Francisco, CA 94102 Conveniently located at the Civic Center BART station. The focus point of the demo will be the NE corner of the market, near the water fountains. ***Signs and literature provided.*** Background on Civic Center campaign: Since April of last year, LGBT Compassion and AoC has been filing complaints and taking legal measures against bird vendors exercising animal cruelty, while monitoring their activities. Although Civic Center has been a challenge, particularly with the primary vendor, Raymond Young Poultry, we have been able to get media attention on this issue, as well as have impact on other vendors acting outside the law. Because of the lack of action on the city's part against this animal cruelty, we're amplifying attention with peaceful demonstrations. ******* CAMPAIGN UPDATE: Last Sunday (3/14) was our first demonstration at this event. Although we expected resistance (and there was some) we were particularly surprised at the positive response we received! Our group distributed hundreds of pamphlets, in English and Chinese, about the Market animal cruelty. We had expected to be generally stonewalled by patrons and passing pedestrians, alike. However, as indicated, we were truly surprised at the positive response we received from so many patrons as well as a majority of Market vendors. We need more advocates!!! We were pleased with our effectiveness but it would improve efforts to have more advocates join us at this event, as we could use more help. At the high point of last weekend's demonstration, we had five people participating in our advocacy. This was enough to get market attention and make a statement (we were certainly noticed!), but would help to have more people if we want this to be an effective campaign. We will also be demonstrating on Wednesday mornings, starting next week (24th March). Wednesday demo updates to follow! For further info on this campaign, please refer to LGBT Compassion.
