Guest guest
Hey all,Just wondering what restaurants/café's people recommend for the SF bay area. I already know about Café Gratitude and Gracias Madre (which are awesome), but I'm not sure of any others that are gluten-free friendly. Here in the South Bay, it seems most of the veg restaurants are the fake-meat style Asian restaurants where I can't get anything other than steamed veggies and rice (which I might as well make at home). Also, if anyone knows where I can get good gluten-free vegan baked goods, that would be awesome. :-D Thanks, Damien
Guest guest
For gluten free folks, I highly recommend Alive Restaurant (organic raw vegan cuisine) at 1972 Lombard St, San Francisco, open Wed - Sun, 5 pm - 9 pm , 415-923-1052. http://www.aliveveggie.com/ Alive feels like an upscale boutique restaurant. Also, from my memory, Cha Ya on Valencia St is mostly gluten free ... it's Japanese food, cooked, very hearty, and soothing. http://www.bayareaveg.org/ug/display.htm?id=643 I love both of these places! (Alive and Cha-Ya) Also, Herbivore is very good ... while they do serve a lot of wheat-based bread or pasta (traditional American food), not good for gluten-free, they ALSO HAVE plenty of vegan dishes that SHOULD BE gluten free, as far as I know ... like: indonesian noodle salad (rice noodle, greens, tofu, cucumbers, pineapple, orange, sprouts, mint, cilantro, red cabbage, onions, sautéed oyster mushrooms and ginger with choice of peanut or tamarind dressing), quinoa salad (with spinach, kidney beans, red onions and celery w/ lemon shallot dressing), roasted beet salad, raw kale salad, various hot entrees made with rice noodles, etc. Herbivore menu (page 1 and page 2) available at http://www.herbivorerestaurant.com/dinner.html http://www.herbivorerestaurant.com/dinner2.html And ... Rainbow Grocery and Whole Foods carry gluten-free baked goods. You can also buy gluten-free cake mixes and cookie mixes etc at Rainbow Grocery. http://www.rainbowgrocery.org/thecoop/hourslocation.html Best of luck to you Damien! Rachel D.
