Beth, thanks for sharing these snippets.

I agree that no real deficiency should ever be taken lightly. But a sunshine deficiency extends far, far beyond concerns about vitamin D or any other particular. The solution to any problem always lies in addressing that problem. In this case, the solution to a sunshine deficiency is sunshine. There is no effective substitute, particularly for the long run.

This principle applies in the broadest sense. No healthful living input substitutes substantively for another. Food does not substitute for rest, socializing does not substitute for activity, and so forth. And in every case, across the board, contrived/invented substances do not substitute for anything at all. They may appear to for a time, as is the case with D supplements (whether D2 or D3). But the illusion is just that and nothing more. Over time, the steroidal effects are significant. This whole vitamin D frenzy is going to be a source of considerable embarrassment to some very well-credentialed people, the only question is when, not if.

All the observations about location and the like are correct, they are common knowledge (I hope). Some of the other ideas, about aging, for instance, reflect a generalized belief that "aging" is a phenomenon related primarily to the passage of time. It is not. What most people call "aging" is the result of prolonged, self-abusive eating and living and has little or nothing to do with the passage of time per se. And ... I recognize that this last point constitutes a paradigm shift of some significant proportion. Best,

Elchanan

PS: One further point of note ... I encourage people to distinguish between reading studies ... the actual journal articles ... and news reports about those studies. Almost all such news reports misrepresent the studies to a significant degree. Best, E

I have pasted a concise article on issues surrounding Vitamin D. While sunlight is the best form of vitamin D, Vitamin D deficiency is a serious condition that is chronic in the U.S. and should not be taken lightly.

"The season, time of day, geography, latitude, level of air pollution, color of your skin, and your age all affect your skin's ability to produce vitamin D....."

'"Darker skinned people need 5-10 times as much exposure to synthesize the same amount of vitamin D as lighter skinned people," says vitamin D expert Michael Holick, PhD, MD.' http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/features/are-you-getting-enough-vitamin-d?page=2 and " The older we get, the harder it is for UV-B rays to turn cholesterol to vitamin D..." http://www.glutathionediseasecure.com/vitamin-d-deficiency.html and "The further you live from the equator, the longer exposure you need to the sun in order to generate vitamin D. Canada, the UK and most U.S. states are far from the equator. (http://www.naturalnews.com/003069.html).
