Today, MLK Jr day, is a great opportunity to do some gentle outreach to your family and friends. A little internet research will reveal that Dr King's son, Dexter Scott King, went vegan in '88, and his wife Coretta subsequently went vegan in '95. Truly excellent examples of Dr King's philosophy of non-violence extended to ALL.

A friend recently reminded me of this great video (subtitled in this version) of President Obama addressing a question from a vegan (friend of mine actually, Nikki Benoit) with a surprisingly articulate and excellent answer. However, this answer deals with the issues of human health/global poverty/government subsidies/environment etc, and I know some vegans/activists are opposed to using these as focal points. Decide for yourself and maybe pass it on to a few friends who might be touched by the progressive ideas of African American leadership.

Hello Brian,

Thanks for that video! I looked up some more info on Coretta Scott and Dexter's

veganism. I found a blog that I enjoyed reading and wanted to share with you

and the bayareaveg community:

a-.html

It's the blog of a vegetarian family, and the mom (I believe) has posted

pictures of vegetarian recipes (looks like all vegan!) to help people learn how

to go veg.

Oh, I just found their info page: they are lacto-vegetarian, not vegan, but

still ... they have an interesting story, and I'm proud of them, as their diet

is way better than the Standard American Diet.

You can read more about the family here:

There is also an article entitled " Celebrating Coretta, Who Celebrated

Nonviolence - and Stopped Eating Animals " here:

Take care,
