1. Decide that you don't need help making something fabulous happen. Hit the town. First grab dinner at your favorite veg place. Then visit various hot spots, searching for a place that is veg-friendly, eco-friendly, jumping with awesome dance music, and romantic. Pay a cover charge or two, buy some beers or some sodas. Stand around wishing you were having more fun. Cost: At least $100 for dinner, drinks, cover charge. 2. Decide that you don't have the time or the money to create fabulousness on your own. Buy a ticket to the social event of the winter, Vegan Outreach Valentine's Dance. One ticket if you're single, two if you're not. Get the most fantastic outfit you can find. Show up at the dance. Dance. A lot. Enjoy the vegan food and open bar and dancing and raffles and outfits, all in the beautiful Brower Center in Berkeley. You don't have to ask if the cupcakes are vegan. You don't have to cover your ears because people next to you are talking about hunting. You do have to dance (well, OK, you don't HAVE to dance) (you can tap your toes and talk to people instead). Give yourself the party you deserve, or give that special someone the romantic evening they're hoping for. Cost: $50 a ticket, everything included (food, beverages, dancing, gift bag), AND it's tax-deductible. I'm just saying.Tickets are now available: http://www.veganhealth.org/vdaySee you there!Alexp.s.Check out the FB page for more details and a contest to win free tickets...but the contest ends tomorrow. http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=222296303667 & ref=ts

Excellent points made by the lovely Alex Bury! A few people have told me that it sounds REALLY fun but is too pricey. Here are my thoughts on this.....

Have you ever donated to a charity you really like? Maybe you did for Christmas. Maybe you did it in the name of a loved one or friend! I did it for my mother (she volunteered with underprivealged children in India last summer, so I found a charity that reflected this and she was ecstatic) Just sent them a $100 donation over PayPal. *sigh* Felt good huh?! It feels EMPOWERING to be part of something special that is working for change.

So if you think about this event within those paramaters... well holy crap! The deal is so much sweeter. You get to donate money to a great organization and then rock out with a bunch of classy, dressed up vegans! I mean, why can't we do this every other weekend?!

I'm always jealous of the Mercy For Animal's galas/partys that seem to happen all the time in Chicago. I want to hang out and party with my peers! But with the successful prom and now this valentine's day dance, I get to do just that. So join me. Bid on me (or don't, hah). I want to meet lots of new people, dress up all fancy and eat a ton of sweets from awesome local bakeries (I have met all of them personally, FABULOUS people). What are you waiting for??? It's up to US to make this be spectacular; all of the treats and streamers and wines are in place.
