Guest guest
*First off I want to say I am vegan and if you know of any vegan vets that can give me advice about my situation please let me know* My 2 1/2 year old cat Sweet-pea broke her leg over six weeks ago- it was a complete fracture of her tibia and fibula, and since it has happened its been one problem after the other, she has already been through so much! The first vet I went to was not her normal vet since it was after hours and their decision was to splint her leg. That evening was a complete nightmare with her rolling around and screaming until she ripped the splint completely off. I had to take her to an emergency vet, vet #2 where they put another splint on her- it was about 8 in the morning by that time. I had to work so I took her to her normal vet, Vet #3, where they took an xray and determined she needed surgery and a metal plate with pins inserted. The whole total amount spent was about $4,000. Sweet-pea spent over a week confined in a large dog crate and then 4 full weeks confined in a very small vanity area with NO chance of jumping. Almost 6 weeks later and I had to get an xray of her leg today. She broke the metal plate & they want/need to re-do the surgery & plate which I just cannot afford. My only alternative is to have her leg amputated, which is such a hard decision to make, but feel its my only option at this point. They say even with re-doing the surgery they cannot guarantee she wont break it again. Both the Vet and Surgeon said they had never seen a cat do something like this. He was almost accusing me of allowing her to jump and I told him, I was " to the T " following his orders, even more so, keeping her in the crate for a few days longer than instructed. He said that this had to have happened within the first two weeks of her recovery as her leg has already started to heal. To fix the plate is at least another 3,000, I am guessing and this one entails them sawing the bone in half that has healed improperly and putting another plate on, which again, he said he cannot guarantee it wont break again. He also said she would do fine and adapt well with three legs, but still...I dont want to make this decision. Yet...financially, the decision is already pretty much made. what would you do? should I get a second opinion? I am just devastated and searching for guidance.
