Every Thanksgiving, our country's President symbolically “pardons” a single turkey, who is subsequently sent to Disneyland to live out a natural lifespan. Of course, the very next day, he and the First Family then eat another bird (among the 45 million others slaughtered annually for this holiday throughout the United States).

It’s not like one of these turkeys deserved better

treatment than the other, and yet one is pampered like a celebrity

As much as I support Obama, I was really offended at his " humor " at

this turkey pardon. He repeatedly made what I considered to be

insensitive jokes which I'm sure the carnivorous majority thought

was funny. I found the irony particularly thick when the turkey

pardoning story was followed immediately by two related (in my view)

news stories: 1) Obama's participation in an upcoming climate change

summit and his deep commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions;

and 2) the grave and alarming finding that male bass fish in many

rivers are showing female characteristics due to hormones being

dumped in the water. Of course, we all know runoff from pig farms and

other livestock operations are likely contributing if not outright

causing this mess, but the public scratches its collective head all

the while preparing to gorge (for a full month) on the very foods

which are responsible for this aberration.
