Hi all, I'm very happy to have found this group! I'm an author in Berkeley, and

I recently published Rising Shadow, the first novel in a series for young adults

that takes place in Santa Barbara and the Bay Area. The protagonist, a college

student named Ashlyn Woods, becomes a vegetarian after spending the day with a

very cool guy she just met at a party. Ashlyn decides to give up meat and never

looks back, even though she is an athlete and, she soon discovers, has amazing

powers.

As a vegetarian for nineteen years, I enjoyed weaving this topic into the

storyline, as there don't seem to be enough vegetarian role models for young

adults. My hope is that my readers will identify with her and question the

beliefs they hold about needing meat to thrive, and perhaps her discussions

about it with other characters will provide talking points for my readers when

they make the switch themselves.

If you're interested in checking out Rising Shadow, it's available as a

paperback on Amazon, or you can read it for free as an Adobe PDF file on my web

site (www.soterians.com).

BTW, as per the posting guidelines for this site, I'm only posting about my book

this one time. My future posts will be about favorite vegan/vegetarian options

and restaurants--so many to choose from around here!

Thanks,

Jacquelyn

Hi all

Jacquelyn, welcome to the group, and thanks for sharing about your book! I read a lot (mostly fiction) and I've been thinking for awhile now that fiction has a huge opportunity to bring a veg/AR message to a new audience ... Martha Grimes recently wove in working in a factory farm in one of her latest books (I think a portion of proceeds may even benefit PCRM).

I know Black Beauty was written to promote kindness to carriage horses (this was written back in the 1800s).

Not sure what other current fiction there is that has veg/AR as a message but glad there is another book out there. I've joked at my book club that we should get together and each write a chapter of a book :-)

Cheers,

Tammy

Thanks for the welcome, Tammy! Three of the five books in the series include vegetarianism and animal rights as a strong theme, and so far the first book is getting a lot of buzz with the 13 to 17 year-old crowd, so here's hoping I can help increase awareness with that important age group. As for your idea of writing a book as a group: do it! Writing is a blast.Cheers,Jacquelyn -----Jacquelyn WheelerAuthor of RISING SHADOWA gift of incredible
