Over7500 are imprisoned within the laboratories of the National Institutesof Health. The Department of Defense incarcerates over 1600. Otherfederal agencies also use primates in experimentation including NASA,USDA, FDA, and the CDC. And animal dealers who sell primates to labslock away 7000 - 10000. Over 20,000 primates are imported to the U.S.for experimentation every year. Many of these primatesexperience horrible conditions. Recent government documentation hasrevealed primates dying of dehydration, wasting diseases, hepatitis, encephalitis, and many other severe illnesses.Theexperiments towhich these intelligent animals are subjected areextremely cruel. Manyprimates are confined to restraint chairs formany hours. Others sufferthrough the throes of withdrawal fromaddictive drugs. Devices are oftenliterally bolted to the skulls ofprimates using steel screws. Infantsare ripped away from their mothersand driven insane. This list ofcruelties only scratches the surface.Theseintelligent socialanimals often suffer terribly from isolation.Approximately 35% of theanimals housed in labs undergo some level ofsocial isolation. Solitaryhousing has been shown to causepsychologically aberrant behavior inprimates within laboratories. Infact, as many as 10% of isolatedprimates engage in self-injuriousbehavior, biting and tearing at theirown flesh though recentinformation indicates that these numbers may bevery low.Duplicationwithin the system is rampant, with someexperiments being funded dozensof times simultaneously, wasting tens ofmillions in federal funding.
