While Mahavir Sanglikar's posting is correct regarding traditional Jain food not being vegan, there are a number of Jain people, including myself, and prominent educators and teachers in the Indian-American Jain community,  who believe that veganism is consistent with our practice of ahimsa and compassion, given the inherent violence involved in the dairy industry and its connection to the meat industry. I have been thinking of compiling vegan Indian recipes for a while now, but i haven't been sure

- that people want to see them

- they can't already get Indian or other recipes from other sources and veganize them

   - though if I was posting recipes i might leave out root vegetables, not for the reasons described in the posting about why traditional Jains avoid roots (multi-lives, hard to confirm), but because uprooting vegetables involves disrupting the soil and insects and effectively kills the plant (and does harvesting of other vegetables leave them intact- or in modern agriculture, do we kill the whole plant when we harvest vegetables?)

- if there's a need, the best way to make them available

  - i was thinking about an online forum where people could post recipes directly

  - also, not s limited to Jain or Indian food, if I could get help with such an online resource, would it be more helpful to be able to put in vegan ingredients (eg what you have in your fridge) and come up with ideas for recipes

I'm trained as a doctor, not an IT specialist, and great at brainstorming but not so great at making time for special projects that require other people's help.

Any thoughts on these ideas are welcome!
