Guest guest
Anthony Fest <adf55 Thu, 10 Sep 2009 16:35:16 -0700 (PDT) Time flies! The ballots for the KPFA Local Station Board election should be arriving at rs' addresses now. I'd like to urge rs with a interest in animal rights to vote for the " Independents for Community Radio " (ICR) team of candidates. Read more about us at www.indyradio2009.org While there isn't a candidate whose activism is specifically focussed on animal rights, the ICR candidates are the ones who recognize that KPFA needs to change its programming and serve new constituencies, and that the listeners should be represented in important decisions. Our main opponents, the " Concerned Listeners " faction (CL), has held a majority on the board since the 2006 elections; in that time, *no* new community-based programs have been introduced (whereas many new programs were introduced in a similar length of time prior to that). Back in 2005, the Program Council approved the animal-rights show " Watchdog, " but management never put the program on the air, even when suitable time slots opened up. Now the present management -- allies of the Concerned Listeners -- have completely halted Program Council meetings, thereby closing the traditional route for community members to propose new shows (and there are many.) To get KPFA moving again will require new management, and that can be accomplished by elected a pro-change, pro-community majority to the Local Station Board. The ICR candidates also are probably the most diverse group who've ever run for the Local Station Board. The group is majority-female, majority people-of-color, and includes several candidates still in their 20s, and two members of the LGBT community. Under the " rank choice " voting system, voters put the candidates in order of preference (so that if, for example, the voter's first-choice candidate isn't elected, the vote then goes to his/her second choice). There are nine seats to be filled in the election, but any future vacancies will be filled by runners-up. So please vote for all eleven ICR candidates, and don't for any CL candidates. Here's one possible ranking: 1. Andrea Pritchett 2. Evelyn Sanchez 3. Banafsheh Akhlagi 4. Rahman Jamaal McCreadie 5. Henry Norr 6. Lara Kiswani 7. Sasha Futran 8. Akio Tanaka 9. Adam Hudson 10. Shara Esbenshade 11. Ann Hallatt Thank you!! ------ End of Forwarded Message
