Those of us who live in SF also have Rainbow Grocery as an option. In

general the prices there are less expensive (even for many of the same

items) than Whole Foods, and the workers tend to be very knowledgeable

and helpful. (Not to say that Whole Foods workers are bad at their

jobs, far from it, just that the worker owned co-op model at Rainbow

results in workers who are directly invested in what they sell.)

But I'd like to add to what you're saying. Even if food at Safeway is

cheaper, there's a high cost to cheap food, and the cheapest food

tends to be the worst for our bodies and the environment.

Well of course part of the reason that Whole Foods is known to many as Whole Paycheck is that there is not as great a demand for their products, as there is for say, Safeway's.  So, the more people who shop at Whole Foods (or Rainbow or the like), the greater the volume, the lower the cost (eventually).   At least, that's how it's supposed to work.

More or less, Safeway seems like a large 7-11 to me these days.

I know a lot of people think Whole Foods is

very expensive, and they DO have some very expensive items there. I usually

shop at both Whole Foods and Safeway, and I find that Whole Foods is much

cheaper on most of the items that I buy - even on organic produce.

In general, I have stopped shopping very much at Safeway because of their high

prices. I did hear somewhere, though, that they just recently have introduced

" new low prices. " I hope so.
