This is the message that got me started on

the cat thing.  I love animals too.  HOWEVER, I guess I just feel really stupid

now.  When I got this message (below), I was up in arms.  I wrote Governor

Schwarzenegger a lengthy message about how not allowing the shelters to hold

animals for more than three days was absurd.  Then, I copied all my

compassionate friends and asked them to do the same.  I took this message at

face value and was lit on fire.  Shame on me.  I did not do my research. 

 

With all due respect Nadine, this message

you received from Joanna is incomplete if not flat out misleading.  (Though I’m

giving the benefit of the doubt and assuming that was not the intention.)  The

FACT is that Arnold

is NOT changing the hold time to 3 days.  The shelters can hold animals for as

long as they want to.  The proposal is that the State will only FUND their holding

the animals for 3 days.   We’re talking money not stay restrictions.

 

We are capable, passionate people.  We can

do more impactful, valuable work by forming groups (like this one) and running

them lean and raising funds that go directly to the cause.  If you want the

State of California

to be solely responsible for any social agenda (or the federal government for

that matter) go ahead and fight that battle.  My particular stance it that it

is a complete waste of energy and time that is doomed from the start.  Our

government is not set up to take care of social issues effectively nor efficiently. 

Just look at the results of their attempts and complete utter failures.  They

can’t seem to keep the money straight and directed at the original

intended target issues.   If we spent half the energy and money that we do

trying to get the State of California

to fix our problems on getting PEOPLE (not the state) to help, we’d have

a lot better results.  – that is of course, just my personal opinion on

that issue, probably more assertions and a bit of a rant.  Sorry, I haven’t

had enough fair trade organic coffee yet this morning. 

 

The other issue that I think is more

critical, is that I not take action on any issue – no matter how

seemingly urgent – until I get all the facts.  My naïve assumptions got

me eating tofu crow.   I would like to see us all make sure we have a little

more support of our facts before we start making assertions and asking others

to act on them.   I’ll try to do better too.

 

My son gets teary at the thought of people

mistreating and/or eating animals.  At 8 years old he’s had a definite

and powerful impact on his entire school.  Some actually thought he was the

only vegetarian at his school.  Through his and our family’s standing-up and

speaking out, we’ve found there are at least a dozen or more vegetarian

families at our little school.  Based upon results, his carbon-footprint and

environmental impact will continue to be nothing short of stellar.   As for my

daughter?  Well, she’s only 5 years old but I can tell you, she won’t

be sitting idle or quiet.  At preschool she’s instructed her classmates

and teachers that cheese isn’t really good for you like they teach you it

is and that milk is NOT good food.   That’s just the tip of the ice berg

for her. 

 

Alrighty then, I’m off to pick

apricots before the squirrels, the crows and the feral cats get them all.
