One vegan opinion re having children

I'm a vegan and a mom of two young adults. I disagree that people must not "breed" if they care about Earth. If you raise responsible children who respect the rights of animals, are politically aware, and make a positive contribution to society, they are a source of joy and help to improve the world.

Raising children in a responsible manner is, of course, better for the Earth. However, we need to face the fact that the US consumes 25% of the Earth's resources. A person born into American society will be a huge drain on the Earth's resources and user of fossil fuels no matter how responsibly we raise them. It is a personal choice of course, and two children is not like have 8 children, it is the replacement rate. Limiting ourselves to one child would have even less impact on the Earth, and none, even less. However, it is a human instinct to have children so if we choose to do so we should do it as responsibly as possible by teaching them to respect the Earth and spread that knowledge. There are many children and animals that need homes also that could be the companions of one biological child or help curb the instinct to have many children.
