That’s why I’m urging everyone to get involved in the first International Day of Action for Elephants in Zoos on June 20th and help bring about the mammoth changes that elephants so desperately need." - Lily TomlinBe a part of the world's largest day of action to end thesuffering of elephants in zoos. Events will be taking place in at least30 cities around the globe. What: International Day of Action for Elephants in Zoos - educational leafletingWhere: Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, 1001 Fairgrounds Drive (Please meet in front of the metal detectors by the main entrance.) (Pleasenote: there will be a race at Sears Point Raceway that day, so you maywish to allow more time for the trip, or take the San Rafael Bridgeinstead of HWY 37.)When: Saturday June 20; 9:45 a.m. - 12 noonContact: Melissa Gonzalez, In Defense of Animals. Melissa, 707-981-7701 Why:Elephants do not belong in an amusement park, where they are forced tolive in the shadow of roller coasters, in a tiny, barren zoo exhibit where up to seven elephants are crammed together. Worse, Six Flags subjects elephants to abusive and cruel training methods that rely on fear, intimidation and physical punishment to force them to comply with commands, perform in circus-style shows and give rides. Since 1995, nine elephants have died at this amusement park, and a tenth, Misha perished in 2008, three years after being shipped from Six Flags to Hogle Park Zoo. She was just 27 years old.
