I’m Anthony Fest, a KPFA newscaster, and I’d like to make an appeal to Bay Area animal-rights activists to become rs to KPFA, and work to make the station better. KPFA, 60 years old now, is one of Northern California’s leading progressive media outlets. However, for the past several years, the station has essentially stood still. Animal rights is among the subjects that KPFA ought to cover regularly, but doesn’t.

Some of you may know that back in 2005, Kate Danaher and Karen Dawn proposed to do a weekly animal rights show. The KPFA Program Council approved the proposal, but management never put the program on the air, even though suitable time slots were available. This has happened to other program proposals as well, and the reason is not bureaucratic ineptitude, but instead a resistance to change by the incumbent management. However, listeners do have recourse: KPFA has an elected Local Station Board (LSB) that oversees the management. At the moment, the status-quo faction holds a majority on the Board, but that could change this year. An LSB election will be held in August; to vote in that election, become a r by contributing $25 or more. It’s easy to at http://www.kpfa.org

If you’d like to do more than vote, please consider running for a seat on the LSB. The main commitment is attending the monthly meeting, typically on the second Saturday of the month (the next meeting will take place May 9 at the Humanist Hall in Oakland, 390 27th Street, beginning at 11 AM). If you have an activist background, and a desire to make KPFA better, please contact me, Anthony Fest, at ADF55 Thanks!
