Support SB 260 - Mandatory spay-neuter of CA pet - reduce pet overpopulation

As you know, our nation faces a companion animal overpopulation crisis, and California is no exception-it is estimated that nearly a half million dogs and cats must be euthanized in California annually because of a lack of good homes. Animal control and sheltering operations cost California taxpayers approximately $250 million each year.

A lifesaving piece of legislation that would help abate this crisis-Senate Bill 250, The Pet Responsibility Act-will be considered by the California State Senate Local Government Committee on April 15. Please attend this hearing at 9:30 a.m. (the bill is scheduled for 11 a.m.) in Room 112 of the State Capitol Building at 10th Street and Capitol Mall in Sacramento.

If it becomes law, SB 250 would prohibit any person from owning or possessing any unaltered cat or dog unless that person obtains an unaltered dog permit or keeps unaltered cats strictly indoors.

This legislation would make California a safer place and save animals' lives. According to one study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, male dogs who are not neutered are almost three times more likely to attack a human being than are those who are sterilized. This bill would not just save animals' lives; it would also save taxpayers, and the state, money.

Please politely call, fax, or (as a last resort) e-mail the Senate Local Government Committee members and urge them to vote " Yes " on SB 250:

Senator Patricia Wiggins (Chair)

916-651-4002

916-323-6958 (fax)

Senator Dave Cox (Vice-Chair)

916-651-4001

916-324-2680 (fax)

Senator Samuel Aanestad

916-651-4004

916-445-7750 (fax)

Senator Christine Kehoe

916-651-4039

916-327-2188 (fax)

Senator Lois Wolk

916-651-4005

916-323-2304 (fax)

Also, kindly forward this message to others in California who might be willing to lend their voices to this important issue.

Thank you for your compassion and action for animals.
