Guest guest
Last week, a bill was introduced to congress that could ban the non-therapeutic use of seven classes of antibiotics on farm animals, who are given approximately 70% of all antimicrobials administered in the U.S. just so they can live long enough on filthy and overcrowded factory farms to make it to slaughter. This important measure would help end the profit-driven overuse and misuse of antibiotics that is rendering these essential life-saving drugs less effective in treating human diseases while at the same time creating ever-more-deadly superbugs on factory farms. It would also force farmers to improve animals' living conditions to some degree based purely on fiscal considerations. Learn more by reading my recent blog post on this issue, or go straight to the Pew Charitable Trusts' e-alert to urge your representative to co-sponsor and support the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act of 2009 (PAMTA).
