Guest guest
> Nope, I never heard of a perogi and I asked 10 people in the office yesterady (all Calif. natives) and they laughed at the word and they never heard of them either.I have tons of cookbooks and I've never come across them. There just weren't enough Polish immigrants in California, I guess. I'll bet they don't know what paczkis are, either. (Pronounced poonch-keys) New Orleans has the Mardi Gras on Fat Tuesday, Detroit has paczkis on Fat Tuesday. It's a custom that dates back to the Middle Ages, when Lent was REALLY observed. Everyone tried to use up all the foods they couldn't use during Lent the day before lent began. Those foods were things like butter and cream. One of the things they made was the paczki, an oversized filled doughnut made with a richer dough than normal doughnuts. I don't much care for filled doughnuts, but I do like Paczkis.
