5 oz (5 squares) unsweetened chocolate

2 sticks butter or margarine

1 3/4 c. brown sugar

5 eggs

1 1/2 tsp vanilla

1 c. flour (use 3/4 c. for fudgier brownies)

optional embellishments

1 c. chopped walnuts or pecans

1 tsp freshly grated orange rind

1/2 tsp cinnamon

a small ripe banana, mashed

2-4 tbsp strong black coffee

1 c. semisweet chocolate chips

or for purists--none of the above : )

1. butter a 9x13 pan. preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. gently melt chocolate. let it cool about 10 minutes.

3. cream butter and sugar in medium bowl till liht and fluffy.

4. add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each. stir in vanilla.

5. stir constantly as you drizzle in chocolate. after all is in beat

well one or two minutes.

6. stir in flour and possible embellishments. mix just enough to

blend thoroughly.

7. spread batter into prepared pan. bake 20-25 minutes or till knife

inserted into the center comes out clean. cut into squares while

still hot, then allow to cool for at least 10 minutes, if you can

wait that long : ).

***I used the 3/4 c. flour amount and boy are they gooey and

moist : ). chocolate isn't really my thing but they were SO good!

and they still taste good the next day--usually my brownies are dry-

tasting by the next day : )*** enjoy.......
