In fact I took cat litter plastic containers, drilled holes in them and filled them up. Those plants have done very well. You just have to water a lot more than if they're in the ground. Tomato plants actually like lots and lots of water. Another tip, plant your tomato plants deep so only about 2-3 inches of the plant actually is above the dirt. This guarantees a solid root structure. Peppers are the same way.
