Guest guest
The version of ham and beans I had was white navy beans with little soy franks cut up into them. Now do u think that resembles ham too much, because it was almost too much like meat for me. What is everybodys call on this ? Should we stay away from meat substitutes, hence " mock meat " ? Guest guest
well, as someone working my way towards becomming a vegetarian and yet keep my husband happy... I'm all for the substitutes. They help me with the transitional phase, plus allow my very picky husband to eat healthier. However, if it bothers you - then don't do it. I think it this is a very personal choice, one with no right or wrong answer. Guest guest
As well as using substitutes in helping to eat less meat, try reducing the amount of meat you serve and make it less the 'main feature' of the meal. Try some of these ideas to help wean the family off meat... Instead of having meat chilli with a few beans, make it more beans and less meat In a jambalaya dish, use a little chicken rather than a lot, maybe 2 breast pieces for 4 people. (I do a veggie black bean jambalaya if anyone's interested in the recipe, and you could add just a bit of meat or seafood to that for transition) Lasagne or pasta bakes with a rich flavourful veg or lentil sauce isn't that different to the meat versions Cook stir fries with a variety of veg and use cashew nuts for protein, gradually use less meat Have more substantial veg side dishes and make the meal more filling that way, a potato or courgette bake with cheese, baked butternut squash etc. Make meat the 'side dish' instead! Pad out casseroles and stews with more veg. I do goulash with just potatoes and cauliflower and you don't miss the meat at all! Do pizza with no meat in the toppings. Try roasting or lightly frying veggies like courgettes, aubergines and onions first for a richer taste Hope this helps although some of the above probably seem a bit obvious! The amount of meat needed for a portion of protein is much less than a lot of people think, 2-3 ounces. Although the meat substitutes can be good, be careful with the some of them and check that they're still 'healthy' and not packed with E numbers and salt! Happy cooking!!
