Guest guest
OK... I feel like I am entering a 12 step program and in need of help... My name is Tammi and I am clueless about avacados... I really love the flavor and wanted to try a new recipe I found here (thanks Dancer, by the way... you pretty much provide dinner ideas for me nightly...) which called for mashed avacados, so I ventured out to buy my first one. Problem one was that there were 2 kinds- I bought one that was small and pear shaped, but there were also larger, rounder ones and I don't know the difference between them. Then, it didn't seem soft enough to eat yet, so I stuck it in the fridge and waited a few days. The next problem... I just stared at it, wondering where to begin. Are you supposed to peel it and if so, how? I cut it in half, hoping to be able to scoop out the pulp, but it was way too firm. I actually cut off the skin and placed chunks of it's remains in the microwave in a futile attempt to soften it. I ended up just using it sliced rather than mashed. The recipe was yummy, but for future use, I REALLY need avacado 101!!!!!! Please help!! ~Tammi Get personalized email addresses from Mail - only $35 a year!http://personal.mail./
Guest guest
The avocados aren't that different. I buy whichever is available. Like sherri said, don't put them in the fridge until after they are ripe (slightly soft) I cut mine in half cutting around the pit, twist the halves apart and then cut in quarters. From here it is usually fairly easy to grab an end of the peel and peel it down and off the quarter. Then you have a nice piece of avocado for slicing. If you are going to mash it scooping out is fine too. Do whatever is easy. Perhaps the produce manager in your grocery store could help too? I think once you handle an avocado that is properly ripe you will know what to look for. Kris --- Tammi <jatafox wrote: > OK... I feel like I am entering a 12 step program and in > need of help...
