Guest guest
Tracy - It is a good idea to take a vitamin. An all around vitamin is a good idea. Calcium is also a good idea to keep your bones strong. The children can take childrens vitamins. :My daughter takes a chewable multivitamin. Her doctor gives her perscription vitamins, with floride, but I am not sure how different they are from the over the counter ones. It sounds like your kids may be into it. It will be some adjustment for your older kids. You will have the school day lunch issues, and birthday party issues, and activity issues. They are all workable. We had a issue when we went to the Zoo in Sept. I did not think to bring food aside from cracker and juice snack for my daughter. They did not have much in the way of vegetarian choices. One would think in a Zoo and a large metropolital city they would have a reasonable choice for vegetarians. I have friends who ask me what I would do if my daughter was invited to a birthday party at McDonalds. I don't see it as a big issue, just feed her before and she can eat the French fries if she wants to. I realize that I am going to be committed to making lunch for school for a long time. My husband sometimes has it more difficult. He works for a large corporation and they don't always have great vegetarian options for lunch. Somedays they have a lot of choices. They see it as a choice like meat fish or chicken not as a lifestyle. Another is Vegetarian-Kids. Good luck Rachel tracylyn wrote: rachel-thanks for replying, to tell the truth i hardly ever drink milk but do eat cheese, as vegetarians do you usually take an all around vitamin? and just the extra? i have SOOOO much to learn! Guest guest
Rachel, I was wondering if you had asked your doctor about the fluoride in the vitamins. I am beginning to do some research myself. We have a history of hypothyroidism in my family. Since Fluoride attacks the thyroid, I have some concerns about its use. Also there is some indication that hypothyroidism is on the increase. Do you have any particular info on this? Guest guest
Tracylyn asked if anybody was raised as a vegetarian. I am and so has my family, for generations. I am from India where we eat Lentils (Dals) everyday and this is a major source of protein for us. Lentilas are generally eaten along with rice (carbohydrates) and or wheat. We make a sort of tortillas from whole wheat called Chapati and this a staple foodand eaten everyday much as the Westerner would eat bread. In addtion, we eat lots of vegetables and fruits which are cooked by themsleves or cokked along with Lentials. Indians also consume a lot of Curds / Youghurt. We prefer to make our own Curds, usng culture from a previous batch and adding to milk. Curd and buttermilk (which is curd diluted with water and whisked well) is generally thought of as being better for health than milk since they have friendly bacteria that makes digestion easier. Curd and rice is a staple of South India and this is very good for health since it is very cooling and soothing to the body. This is a must especially in Summers. As an aside, traditional cooking is done using iron woks and cooking greens like Spinach in an iron vessel adds to the nutrients of the food being cooked.. However one must not store food in iron vessels, but empty it into another vessels after it has been cooked. This is one easy and sure way to avoid anemia.
