Guest guest
Where to find all these good ingredients? I've recently moved back to PA, and I'm trying to locate stuff. But for anyone who lives in, or within driving distance of, the Finger Lakes region of New York State, there's good news. GreenStar Food Co-op in Ithaca NY (on Fulton Street, between Buffalo and Seneca Streets) is the nicest and best food co-op in central New York State, and it's open to the public. You don't have to be a member to shop there. I highly recommend this store to anyone who wants to find these things like TVP, veggie burgers, herbs and spices in bulk, tofu in various forms, oh, all sorts of good things. It started as a little buyers' club back in the 'seventies, and then grew into a sort of members-only hippie food store, and then grew even more to its present form as a fabulous small supermarket open to the public. It's still growing, there's a demand for these good things. I still go to Ithaca to visit friends, and when I do, I raid GreenStar and come home with a carload of goodies. You can shop in an environment-friendly manner there. I bring my own shopping bag and my own containers. There's a table in back with a scale on it for those of us who like to re-use our containers. I weigh the container and note the weight on a sheet of paper (yes, the store provides little pencils and papers to write down these tare weights), and then fill the jar or bag. I like being able to shop this way. I hate having to throw packaging away and waste empty containers. (Yes, I recycle, but I'd rather not have to keep generating empty cans and jars in the first place.) If you're anywhere near Ithaca NY and want a large selection of good things and/or are concerned about being able to get organic food (both organic and regular foods are available, and are labeled so that you what you are getting). then GreenStar is the place for you!
