Guest guest
I am not a vegetarian--yet--but would like to be. It is such a challenge to figure out how to eat a balanced, healthy diet, getting enough protein. I would appreciate suggestions. Also, most recipes call for the crockpot only being on for 8 hours or less. Are there any ways to modify this for those away from home for 10-plus hours? Thanks! Guest guest
There's a nice little site here with a protein calculator: http://www.becomehealthynow.com/article/proteins/1126 If you can't find a cooker slow enough for your needs, you can always use a timer like the ones you use to turn lights on and off when you're away from home. It will turn the crockpot on at the correct time for supper to be ready when you return. But I have found that if you use enough liquid, you can set things on low for quite a long time. Things like pasta will turn to mush, but beans and whole grains and sturdy vegetables should be fine. Guest guest
That protein myth plagues us vegetarians, but really vegetarians get plenty, as a rule, and we eat a very colorful-vitamin nutrient rich diet so we actually eat better than the omnivores in most cases. Being a veg is easy and you needn't stress about protein. Just read the labels on the ingredients you are using and you will see how you are getting enough; you probably get your daily needs in just two meals! Just eat a variety of foods and you will feel strong and healthy. If you are super-active doing sports or weightlifting, you may want to add some protein shakes to your diet, but even omniovres add shakes when they are pumping up. Most people don't need extra protein though. I want to get one of those timers for my crock pot outlet. I usually just put stuff together before I go to work, and then phone the kids at lunch to tell them to turn it on! *lol* Summer is here, and they are older now and on the go more with their friends, so when they are not home I think the timer would be best. You just keep trying some of our recipes each week. Take it slow if you need to. Ask as many questions as you want and we will try to help. It is nice having you in our group, you are welcome here. ~ PT ~ Month of June - beautiful are the fields; Smooth the sea, pleasing the strand; Beautifully long the day, playful the ladies. ~ anon.
