Hi Jack,

I'm curious as to why you are a vegetarian? I don't mean that in an

aggressive way, i'm just wondering, because all of the reasons that

i am a veggie are the exact same reasons i might be a vegan, such as

health, ethical beliefs, environmental concerns etc.

I'm not implying that all vegetarians want to go vegan, more that i

would have thought most veggies understood why a person would want

to be vegan.

Also, sorry to bring up religion again, and no offense meant to

anyone, but, since i don't believe in god i can't be trying to be

better than " him " . In fact, i don't believe i'm trying to be better

than anyone or anyone. Veganism isn't, or shouldn't, be about

competition. Its a personal choice.

.... and i didn't think i'd have to defend this choice in a

vegetarian forum.

This post isn't meant aggressively, i just felt it important that i

expressed my opinion.

I'm not Jack, but perhaps I can offer another p.o.v.

I was never much of a meat eater. I simply didn't like the taste, for

the most part. Because of that, I tended to get anemic easily, and

protein deficient. When I stopped eating meat this time, I made a

conscious effort to replace proteins, etc, and I'm healthier because of

it. That, combined with a tendency in my family towards high

cholesterol, heart attacks, and strokes, made going veggie a good choice

for me, for health reasons. For me, it has nothing to do with ethics,

or environmental concerns, or anything like that. I sometimes justify

it to other people by saying " no animals have to die for me to eat " , but

that's simply because it's the easiest way to explain what I will or

won't eat. For me, and considering my diet, I don't see any significant

improvements to my health by eliminating the milk I drink, the

occasional egg I use when baking, or the limited amounts of cheese that

I cook with. All things in moderation, hm?

Personally, I don't have any problems with eating animal products, like

honey and eggs and milk. I have no problem with leather (and in fact,

if an animal IS going to die (and they are, because there are people who

are going to eat meat, regardless of my personal beliefs), I much prefer

knowing that as much of it as possible is being used productively,

rather than going to waste. I don't use wool, but that's simply because

I'm allergic to it. My personal ethics aren't impacted by using animal

products. Maybe its rationalization, I'm not sure. At any rate, its

how things work out in MY head, which is the only one I have to live in.

(Or maybe I just like cheese too much to give it up LOL)

I have a couple of friends who are vegan. They've never been able to

explain their choices to me in any way that makes sense, either. I

don't doubt that what they're doing is right for them, but I certainly

don't understand it through my own filters.

Anyway, this isn't meant to be pro or con vegan. Its just another data

point.
