I had a party last nite - a surprise b-day party for my roommate. As

usual, I had a TON of food. Because the party was in honour of a devout

carnivoire, and because lots of the guests contributed things to the

table, there were meat options as well as meatless nibbles.

When I was cleaning up last night, I noticed something interesting.

The meatfree platters were almost empty (guacamole, salsa, cheese,

crackers, veggies and dip, fruit, hummus, etc), and most of what I was

packing up was meat (cold cuts, Chinese spareribs and other appetizers,

meat filled tortellini, etc). My friends are supportive of my dietary

choices, but a LOT of them are always telling me that they couldn't do

it, because they like meat so much. I thought it rather interesting

that most of what people chose to eat didn't have meat in it.

I pointed it out to the bf, while he was helping me clean up, and his

opinion was that most people don't have any idea that meatless dishes

can be wonderfully flavourful and satisfying. Certainly he had no idea,

before I came along. I also noticed that almost everything he asked me

to package up for him to take home (I always send him home with

leftovers) was meatless. A convert in the making? Perhaps...

Anyway, I thought it was interesting.

That is interesting. I think people are becoming more

aware. I also think that meat eaters for the most part

overrate the flavor of meat. Meat really doesn't have much

of a flavor, IMO, unless you add a lot to it in the way of

seasoning. The fat, blood and those aspects to the meat

are not full of flavor on their own. Now ham has flavor b/c it

is cured, but you can cure a piece of soy protein just as easily

and with just as flavorful results and it is way healthier

and easier to digest, not to mention cruelty free.

I find myself hopeful that as more of us share our recipes

and lives with those who eat meat they will see how easy

it is to do; delicious too. :)
