I'm in rural NC too, & I find people are just extremely curious. In a lot

of cases, I'm the only veg they know, so they ask lots of questions.

Questions that may seem rude or dumb, but they're just trying to learn more

(at least, that's what I keep telling myself through gritted teeth).

That's the case in " country cookin " type restaurants. Sometimes I expect to

find pork floating in the iced tea. I've found that a lot of those places

also have 'round the clock breakfast. It's easier to get a veg option that

way. Pancakes are my friends! ( " Yes I'm SURE I don't want bacon with that! " )

Outside of the country style places, I've found restaurants to be very

accomodating. Any time I haven't been able to find something on the menu,

I've asked the server, & the chef has prepared something veg for me.

My big complaint is with grocery shopping. Not exactly veg friendly. My

local grocery store carries 3 different brands of souse meat, but I have to

drive 30 minutes to find an eggplant. A trip to Whole Foods is like Xmas

for me.

We used to have a Fresh Fields here [VA], years ago, but it didn't

stay long. I was really disappointed when it left. I think there is a

Whole Foods about an hour from me, but I've never been. We

have a couple local small stores though. For a big city, it is really

surprising to me that we don't have a large one.

lol karen.. i know how you feel about the natives.. i

also live in NC, and not only that have begun

attending a HBCU school, where people look at me like

i am off my rocker when i tell them i am vegetarian.

luckily i live within a half hour of a whole foods..

but also, if you have a 'harris teeter' near you, they

offer a good selection of vegetables, and a pretty

good variety (most times) of organic foods..
