Guest guest
It's important to remember that in order to absorb calcium, you also need Vitamin D and Magnesium in your diet. they put vitamin d in milk, but never magnesium. Vitasoy has magnesium / vitamin d. (not sure about other brands). I have read studies that actually suggest drinking milk can increase one's risks for osteoporosis. (although most of them are linked on vegan websites e.g. milksucks.com so i suppose you could argue they're biased). In the book " mad cowboy " by howard lyman he says that there is too much protein in milk, so you actually lose calcium when you excrete the excess protein. but i'm not sure, i think the problem might be more that milk doesn't have magnesium. Soymilk is usually fortified with calcium, vitasoy is 10% per cup i think, which is less than milk. Really i think your bestbet is to buy some cal/mg supplements. I disagree with those studies that claim vitamins don't work, / that you have to get your nutrients from " natural " sources. if you look at the ingredients of most foods, like cereal you'll notice a lot of the vitamins are fortified. if none of this was absorbed then lots of people would be in even worse health, i think. meat-eating americans tend to eat a lot less plant food than vegetarians. It is basically impossible to get all of your vitamins from food; you would have to eat and eat and eat, a great variety of fruits and veggies everyday.
