When prepared correctly, it has a wonderful almost meaty texture. It's much more dense than tofu. I've tried numerous times and just can't seem to get it. Rather frustrating actually. Thomas has actually said to me before, " so what do ya wanna do for dinner or are we having tempeh again? " (meaning that anytime I've tried making tempeh we wind up going out to eat) There's a pizza place around here called Mellow Mushroom and i absolutely love their tempeh..on their tempeh sandwich or as a topping on a pizza.
