Guest guest Posted January 24, 2003 Report Share Posted January 24, 2003 retarded is an english term derived from the french word 'plutard' which, incidently, does mean slow, however the translation and current term retard, does not mean slow, any more than cinderella's 'glass slipper' is made of fur. (the original slipper, in the french, was fur, and roughly translated to become glass) however the connotation in our society is no less vulgar than a racial slur or mysogynistic curse: it carries an accusation of lesser qualities (lesser based on some mythical utopian average, which incidentally, is humurous to think that being average is somewhat desirable) and is as vulgar and narrowminded as any other vicious stereotype or label. People who developmentally different are not slow; they have qualities you and I do not and can not posess, and much of the time it is our failings that cause them to be labelled as lesser. Using derogatory terms propagates an unfair system that says we should all be judged by one standard, which is idiotic at best. Maybe you're the one that's slow, if you can't realize that.
