Saw Dr. Robert C. Atkins on TODAY today. After 30 years and at least ten

books, he's come out with Atkins For Life, which, surprise, " re-introduces

carbohydrates to maintain a healthy diet for life. "

 

While he advocates about 60 carbs per day, rather than the 250 or so

usually recommended, he's confident his diet will prove out as the best of

the bunch now being tested by the government. (?)

 

On the hard questions, he weaseled. Katie Couric even chided him for

looking exasperated when she raised the question of saturated fats, saying,

" You know it's got to come up. " He replied to the effect that saturated

fats IN THE ABSENCE OF CARBOHYDRATES don't do the same things to the body

that they do when combined with carbs. Okay, fair enough, he may well be

right.

 

However, if this is so, then how can his new book " re-introduce carbs " to

the diet " to maintain health for life " ? Hm.

 

Once again I was left with the distinct taste of snake oil in my mouth.
