After all, a heavy Geography book wielded edgewise is much more lethal. It was probably just a fad that blossomed and wilted, and in fact they never really stopped making them, although now they're making a nostalgia come-back and so are expensive. Plastic ones replaced them, as I recall. Those cheap ones with stickers on, instead of the painted metal ones we grew up with.
