Guest guest
No, it is true. The school lunches need to be 60% of the daily caloric intake. This is assuming that these kids don't get food at home (free lunch program, etc). These lunches are starchy and fattening, and yes the kids eat them. No, I will not ever sit down with my child while they consume disgusting, government issued fillers b/c my children will never go through the public school system. We also wouldn't ever accept handouts. The regular school lunches are crap. The kids that actually buy their lunch have the option of the snack bars. This is the Federal level and has been in place for decades (long before W - not his fault). The Federal Government will fund the free lunch programs but in order to do that, ALL lunches have to follow specific guidelines set by the Gov. A school can choose not to follow the guidelines but cannot receive monies from the Gov, therefore funding the lunch programs themselves...This doesn't happen, no school can afford this. SO, all schools follow these guidelines and all the children at the school (free lunch or not) eat this heavily starchy, fattening, high calorie garbage. My husband (long before we were married) ate school lunches and his weight shot up to 199 lbs. Keep in mind that most of the children on the free lunch program are also on food stamps...Food stamps need to stretch so most people buy a lot of fillers. So, you have kids eating breakfast...Then a hugely caloric lunch...Then go home and have more fattening foods. Some of the fattest kids I've seen in all towns I've lived in have been the poorest. The Government will give the handouts but demand to control every facet of its use. We all know how misinformed 'officials' are when it comes to nutrition. So, we're getting our children fatter and fatter as opposed to healthier. And this is a good deed? And I do get your point, Gene...Many children will not eat this garbage, but the poorer children...Whom don't have much of a choice, will.
