That's what I'd like to see preserved, freedom of speech, and free exhange of ideas. Anything curbing the public discourse is bad. The abortion issue is funny. Neither my wife nor I would advocate it, especially not as a method of birth control, but by the same token if the mother's life is threatened then certainly there should be an option to save her. What we balk at is how politicians use this personal, private, and very painful choice as a handle to manipulate people's emotions so they can channel votes into other things. In other words, politicizing this or any other medical or social issue, while inevitable, is reprehensible and unconscionable. That they do so in a mincing pose of self-righteous, even smug, superiority makes it all the more galling. The government can jolly well get its nose, fingers, and opinions the hell out of my private, personal life and decisions, up to and including abortion, speeding, murder, and all else. If I choose to do something, what ever it is, it's my free choice, and the consequences I face will by mine alone. So I guess I'm saying I always choose life and freedom, and having anyone tell me what I can and cannot do, based not on physics but on socio-religious political manipulation, is anathema to me. How dare they? And one small point: I don't see the sneering, rich right-wingers, or anyone else for that matter, lining up to pay for the pregnancies and adopt the babies of women who might otherwise choose abortion. All I see is posturing, preening, and blanket condemnation. The few who try to be compassionate and help are gunned down, protested, and marginalized, even demonized, by strident unblinking politicians and their marching morons. So just by looking at the situation, even casually, I'm left sympathizing with the more democratic notion of trying to help, rather than making up rules and passing bogus laws. Remember the Volstead Act. Yes, alcoholism is a scourge, and drunk driving a horror that reaps huge numbers of lives each year. Making alcohol illegal only made things an order of magnitude worse, and allowed organized crime to become huge. Duh. There are better ways.
