Guest guest
In Fast Food Nation, he explains what natural flavorings means, but it's been so long since I read that book I can't remember!! LOL. If I think about it today I'll see if I can find it and look it up. Hmm, still not sure what it is lol couple of paragraphs here and here is full link http://www.veggielawyers.org/petition.htm CITIZEN PETITION The undersigned submits this petition, under 21 C.F.R. § 10.25, to request the Commissioner of Food and Drugs to amend 21 C.F.R. § 101.22(h), setting standards for use of the terms " natural flavor " or " natural flavoring " on food labels. SUMMARY When the Food and Drug Administration revamped its food labeling requirements in 1993, it recognized that " [p]eople often look to the ingredient label for health reasons – perhaps to avoid substances they are allergic or sensitive to – or for religious or cultural reasons. " 1 While the FDA has taken great strides to ensure that consumers are informed about the products they eat, manufacturers are still free to hide a number of ingredients under the term " natural flavors. " Under the current regulatory scheme, manufacturers can mask a variety of products – including derivatives of meat, poultry, seafood, dairy products, and nuts – under the guise of " natural flavoring. " As a result, individuals with food allergies, those with religious dietary codes, and those with strong ethical beliefs about animal cruelty cannot avoid objectionable products hidden within " natural flavors. " Petitioners, therefore, respectfully request that the FDA amend its regulations to require manufacturers to disclose the sources of their natural flavorings.
