Thai fish sauce

Hello Pat,

I have spent quite some time looking for a substitute for Thai fish sauce (nam

pla) and have been unable to find it, even though I am positive that I once read

somewhere that a vegetarian/vegan substitute was available. I was even planning

to post a request to this group to ask if anyone knew of a substitute. A few

days ago, out of the blue, my question was answered without me even asking it!!

There was a posting to another group to which I belong (The Vegetarian Kitchen)

with a list of substitutes for various Asian ingredients. I haven't tried using

this yet, but they suggest a mixture of soy sauce and lime juice as a substitute

for fish sauce. I hope you find this helpful and, if you do use it in the near

future, perhaps you could let everyone know if is works.

Cheers for now,

Marie

Onderwerp: Vegetarian/vegan fish sauce?

Can anyone tell me whether or not there is a vegetarian/vegan substitute

for Thai fish sauce? I know there is a vegetarian Worcestershire Sauce

(although I've not found it yet - not really looked as hard as I could,

I reckon) and that my Chinese Oyster Sauce is the vegetarian variety -

all I ever use. One can always omit the sauce, of course, but I think

somewhere somehow some clever company must have come up with a

non-real-fish variety ;=)

Many thanks,

pat

Thanks, Marie - I feel there ought to be a veggie substitute too - shall

keep looking. Meanwhile, I'll try the soy sauce and lime tonight and let

you know. I'm also thinking of trying to make my own - recipes from this

group yesterday ;=)

best.
