I know of orangutan sanctuaries where they are treated

and released back into the wild. Unfortunately, poachers

continue to capture/kill them after their release. Also

the government in such situations is not always as helpful

and/or able to help (financial issues and the like). This

is in Borneo. There is also a problem with destruction of

their habitat for logging & agricultural/farming activities.

Several species have been saved ONLY because of zoos and

then reintroduced into the wild. The California condor is a

notable example.

In view of the ongoing habitat destruction around the world,

I think well-run zoos are a good thing. San Diego and the

Bronx Zoo come immediately to my mind - there are many

others including some small specialized ones, such as Gerald

Durrell's zoo on the Isle of Jersey.
