I love reading the recipes and all of the interesting posts. It is so nice to

get a

mix of conversation mixed in with all of the wonderful recipes and food ideas.

I have learned so much in just the short time this list has been active and I

thank you all.

Pat, that soup recipe sounds so good. I have never used a pressure cooker

before. Right now my food prep wish list has a new food processor on the

top of it, but I think I will definately have to add pressure cooker to the list

as

well. Beans take a long time to cook the conventional way, and that would

really be helpful to have around. What other things do you often use it for?

Shawn, I will try and get that feral veggie girl's phone # for ya. *lol* She

doesn't look the type to have a phone though. ;-) Your recipe for spicy

potatoes and chickpeas sounds very good. Flavors and textures that I have

never tried before. You sure seem to like spicey. Yum. I will be adding the

recipes into the files sometime this weekend. I think I am up to Oct 2nd... so I

certainly have some catching up to do; best to not procrastinate for too long.

Dittos on the Happy Thanksgiving wishes to all of our Canadian friends! I

hope your weekend is wonderful. I love Thanksgiving. Good food, good

fellowship with loved ones, and less stress than some of the other holidays.

A time of joy and reflection, much like Mabon.

Anne, thanks so much for the info. I don't think we have any Indian cooking

stores around out here in the boondocks of Oregon, but I am certainly going

to be on the hunt for that spice mix. We can get great Mexican cooking spices

and ingredients in my area b/c so many have moved up here from So. Cal,

but we don't have much of other cooking supplies. Maybe if I ask around at

my local healthfood markets where some of the folks are more multiculturally

aware. I will have to recheck those bean bins to find some mungs too. I am

sure living within a different culture in much harder than just enjoying the

good food. Thanks for the recipes and insight.

Well, I did survive the sleepover. I probably should get off the computer for a

little while and encourage them to get everything picked up so I can drive

them home. I hope everyone has a pleasant saturday. Namaste

P.S. My sister-in-law in NY wanted me to host a Tupperware party online for

her. I told her I would try and ask if anyone here was interested in that stuff.

If

you are send me a private email to patchouli_troll and I will send

you the online invite to check out their products on the site. I told her I

would

not spam or send them to everyone on this list b/c unless they individually

expressed interest. I wouldn't want to pester or be guilty of " spamming "

anyone if they hate Tupperware parties. *lol* They do have great products

though and I own quite a bit myself already. :-)

Soups, stews, chili - cooking beans of all kinds. (Some

other uses I make of it are not suitable for a vegetarian

list.) It does a marvelous job on soups - very quick

cooking, and they taste as if you'd simmered them all day.

I make soup a lot. I use it for carrots and potatoes -

long-cooking veggies. There are desserts you can make in

them too, but I haven't yet.

This is what to do (IMHO): get to your library and get hold

of a copy of Lorna Sass's book 'Great Vegetarian Cooking

Under Pressure' and read it. Then you'll know what you can

really do with a pressure cooker. I can't recommend this

book highly enough. What Lorna says about pressure cookers,

is all true. If you read her book, and you could see

yourself making the recipes - or similar things - then you

really could use a pressure cooker.

If you like the idea of lentil soup in a total of 15 minutes

- or (soaked) black beans cooked in about 7 to 10 minutes -

you'd love a pressure cooker. Homemade beans are cheaper,

taste better, have less sodium than canned beans.

The Lorna Sass book goes on at some length about how easy

risotto is in the pressure cooker - but I've never tried it,

mainly because I've never had risotto, so I don't know what

it's SUPPOSED to be like. Some day I'll try it.

Here's a pressure cooker website (although not a

specifically vegetarian one) - lots of info here. She's

selling booklets of recipes for $3.50, but some of the

booklets are free, and the tips and hints are all free.

PS to my prior message: as much as I love my pressure

cookers (and I do!), I'd put the food processor first too.

I have a food processor (I'm on my second Cuisinart, the

first one having died after 15 some odd years of hard use)

and it is definitely the most-used appliance in my kitchen

(stove and fridge don't count).
