Guest guest
ST. LOUIS (Wireless Flash) -- The animal lovers at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) are on the defensive over an ad campaign that has left a bad taste in the mouth of fat folks. PETA's most recent billboard in question is a picture of a bloated Elvis Presley with the caption " Don't Be Cruel to Your Heart and Body, " implying eating meat is to blame. Fat folks at the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA) are unhappy with PETA, saying they view the billboard as a " cheap and mean- spirited publicity stunt which works at the expense of fat people. " NAAFA spokeswoman Jeanette DePatie says the organization has sent letters to PETA asking for the removal of the signs and for members to " show respect for people as they show for animals. " PETA president Ingrid Newkirk admits she's received the letters, but she says there's no point in responding because she thinks NAAFA's concerns are " not legitimate, " and it would be " a disservice to tell society to accept fat.
