Guest guest
I want to first state that I am in no way connected to any of the following companies, it's just I've seen with my own eyes the affects of these great foods on my critters. I also freely acknowledge that there are other wonderful foods out there that I don't know about simply because they are not sold in my town... BUT... I love Solid Gold dog food. When my dog got cancer last year, I kinda freaked a bit... and I accidentally found this food... human grade, made with lamb no rice, wheat or soy (big allergans in dogs) and ... simply put, my dog loves it and he is so healthy now. Before, he had a constantly dripping nose and sneezed alot. No more except when I give him commercial treats with wheat in them. I'm not for sure, but he is allergic to something, wheat or otherwise in commercial stuff. I also had a stray dog that I kept for a couple of weeks last year. She was the kind of dog that after petting her, you had to wash your hands because you smelled like " dog. " She stayed outside in my yard, never bathed her... the only thing I did was feed her this dog food. After two weeks, no smell. I am not kidding and I know, I never would have believed it but it really happened to me. Has to be all the chemicals and other yucky stuff in normal (including Science Diet and Eukanuba and... ) dog food. Seeing is believing. I have also heard of folks with dogs that were really itchy, switched to this and dogs much happier. OK, new speices. My cats. Both strays, nothing fancy. Grew up on cat chow and birds... Hair balls from heck. Or so I thought. I tried everything. Hair ball control treats, cat food, petrolium jelly... Bulimic almost every day. Even talked to my vet, suggested perhaps a BARF diet, but that's a ton of work. I tried a couple of higher end cat foods like Nutro and Purina Pro Plan and it helped but... finally, I tried the really expensive stuff (of course). Wellness is the brand. (Solid Gold has a cat food, but they tried it and didn't like it.) It has been a month now, we are on our second very expensive bag and the only puke I've had was some little critter. I'm sold. I hate cat puke and if you've ever stepped in it barefoot in the middle of the night, money really becomes less important. Not to mention my cats are healthier. Again, it's human grade with tons of yummy stuff... I would eat it. There is cause to be concerned with vegetarian cats. They require taurine in their diet, found in low levels in plant foods, high in meat. Cats are carnivores only. That is how they evolved, that's the reason they have big canines and sharp claws. That is also the reason that normal cat food adds taurine. Look at the ingredient list, it will be added in there. Why? Because most foods use garbage, like what's left of the grain after making beer, that has no nutritional content so they have to add the important stuff back in. Kinda like Minute Rice. Enriched grain product is basically cardboard with water and a vitamin pill. Anyways.... can cats and dogs be healthy on vegetarian diets? Dogs, maybe, cats... it is your baby, I would be extremely careful and do tons of research. I realize that many of you are ethically opposed to eating animals. I think that is great and I think it is great to try to completly live what you believe. Cats eat meat. No ethics involved, it is who they are, or should be. Just like fish live in water, can't change it, maybe shouldn't try. BARF diets can be great, but it takes great care to do and more time than I have and ... if you don't like dealing with meat, maybe one of the highend pet foods is for you. There is a book writen by a DVM who is also a natropath, of course I can't remember the name of the book right now, but he talks alot about pet food. He likes the raw food diet but if you can't do it, lists good foods that are next best. The ones that I've mentioned were on this list, as were several others. I don't fool around with my pet health, I've done more research on dog food than I have on my food since he has no choice in the matter... Anyways, this all the random scattered opinions of a pet lover... take them for what they are worth. Genie I would rather regret that which I have experienced than wish I had experienced that which is past.
